Decatur Sales Spotlight: Karen Garrett

We are featuring Karen Garrett. Karen has been part of our New Car Sales Department for a total of 23 years.

Q: How long have you been with James Wood Motors?
A: I’ve been with a total of 23 years. I first worked in accounting in various positions for 12 years, then worked in the Decatur school system for 11 years while my daughter was in school, then came back to work here in the Sales Dept in 2007 about halfway through her Senior year.

Q: What quote inspires you most?
A:

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

– Colossians 3:2

Q: Tell us about your family.
A: I’ve been married to my husband, James Ray Garrett, for 36 years. We were both X-ray techs, & now are both in the car business! Before I knew him, he was a jockey, then after we married, he spent some time riding cutting horses. He also enjoys playing guitar & even took piano lessons while our daughter was taking lessons! Now he is trying his hand at building our “retirement home”! God blessed us with one daughter, Tiffany. She is 29 years old, went all the way through school here in Decatur, then went to A&M in College Station for 3 years before changing her major to Nursing; then she transferred to MSU in Wichita Falls for Nursing School. She is currently a Pediatric Nurse @ United Regional in Wichita Falls & has been married 5 years to John Tucker.

Q: What sets you apart in the car-buying industry or experience?
A: I had a friend that I worked with at the school who told me when I left there to sell cars that she didn’t see me as a car salesperson. I asked her why & she said that I wasn’t pushy! I told her I knew that was the reputation car salespeople have, but that I didn’t plan to be pushy or offensive to anyone. I always want to allow God to guide me each time I am with a customer, hopefully make them feel comfortable with the whole experience, & leave them feeling satisfied. I remember James Wood saying to treat every customer like they are his family, so I try to do that with everyone I come in contact with.

Q: Favorite thing about working at James Wood Motors?
A: I love the positive atmosphere, the feeling of being with “family”. I’ve worked with so many great people & made some great friends!

Q: Best unexpected selling experience? Or most unique…
A: I had a customer come from Australia about 5 years ago. He had been searching for a certain type of truck on the internet & ran across one we had. He printed off the pic of the truck & brought it with him. My husband met him & asked him what he would have done if the truck wasn’t here. God works in ways we don’t understand; we still had the truck when he got here! He decided to purchase the truck and had to make arrangements to have it shipped back to Australia. His return flight wasn’t for 2 weeks (in the event that the truck wasn’t available & he had to keep searching). He was staying at a hotel in Dallas by the airport, got lost trying to find it after he left here the first night, then came back the next day for he & my husband to make arrangements for shipping the truck. My husband invited him to stay with us until time to return home! I was a little skeptical at first, but I know now that God’s hand was in the whole situation. We kept in touch & he brought his wife back with him 2 years later, bought another truck & stayed with us 2 weeks. They have been one other time with 4 of their friends & stayed with us then as well. Made lifelong friends!
